Diamonds and other mantle minerals of the northwestern part of the East European Platform

ABSTRACT

Volume 1.

Report on scientific and research work: 172 pages, 46 figures, 28 tables, 180 references.

The object of the research – diamond, garnets, chrome spinels, picroilmenites, chrome diopsides and other mantle minerals of the Ukrainian shield.

The research methods – визначення геолого-генетичних типів корінних джерел алмазу.

Research methods – trace-mineralogical, crystal-morphological, electron-microscopic, ontogenic, electron-probe, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric.

The results of the study of typomorphism of morphology, chemical composition and physical properties of mantle minerals, crystalline inclusions in them and their paragenesis are provided. The carbon isotopic composition of Ukrainian placer diamonds, the composition and content of impurity-structural defects, and the composition and features of mineral and fluid inclusions in their crystals are characterized. On the basis of these results, the reconstruction of the diamond-forming environment (paragenesis), the composition of the diamond-forming fluid (growth system) and the PT conditions of diamond growth was carried out. Characterization of subsolidus transformations of mantle minerals in kimberlites of the Azov region is provided. Taking into account the typomorphic features of the studied mantle minerals, the geological and genetic types of the original diamond sources were determined. The results of the work can be used in diamond prospecting. The work has scientific-theoretical and practical significance.

Volume 2.

Report on scientific and research work: 185 pages, 57 figures, 29 tables, 106 references.

The object of research – kimberlites, alkaline-ultrabasic rocks, mantle minerals from these rocks and their scattering aureoles in the sedimentary rocks of the Ukrainian Shield and the Carpathians.

The purpose of the work – localization of promising areas for kimberlite exploration, improvement of mineralogical criteria for kimberlite prediction.

Research methods – trace-mineralogical, optical-spectroscopic, electron-probe, LA-ICP MS, isotopic-geochemical.

The results of the study of the material composition of olivine melanephelinite dikes of the Gubkiv manifestation from the Northwest of the Ukrainian Shield are presented. It was found that they took root in the earth's crust 2047±10 million years ago. The composition and geochemical features of pyropes from Upper Cretaceous and Quaternary sediments of the upper reaches of the Dnister River are characterized. Their similarity with pyropes from intrusions of pyrope peridotites and pyroxenites of the Paleozoic age of the Bohemian crystalline massif was established. Data on the composition and geochemical features of the rocks of the upper mantle under the Ukrainian Shield are presented. The results of determining the isotopic age of zircons from the kimberlites of the Eastern Azov region are discussed. It is shown that the phenocryst zircons have a Devonian age, while the xenocrysts have a Paleoproterozoic and Archean age. The results of studies of clastogenic rutile from diamond-bearing conglomerates and sandstones of the Bilokorovychi suite, as well as the predicted petrotypes of its parent rocks and their likely location are given. The results of the work are used by production organizations in forecasting and searching for kimberlites. The work has important scientific and applied significance. .
