Indicator minerals of diamond-bearing rocks on the Ukrainian Shield and its slopes

ABSTRACT

The object of the research – mantle and impact diamonds, garnets, chrome diopsides, chrome spinels, ilmenites and rutiles of the Ukrainian Shield.

The purpose of the work – detection of indicator minerals of diamond-bearing root sources.

Research methods. Trace-mineralogical, crystal-morphological, electron-microscopic, electron-probe, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, ontogenic.

Features of endogenous mantle and exogenous impact diamonds of Ukraine are considered. It is shown that diamonds from Neogene sands of Ukraine differ from metamorphic diamonds in crystal size, general morphology, isotopic composition of carbon and helium, content and state of nitrogen impurities, spectral types, solid and multiphase fluid inclusions. Impact diamonds from meteorite craters and Neogene sands of Ukraine are typical apographite paramorphoses. The results of the study of the peculiarities of the chemical composition and nature of distribution in various geological formations of the Ukrainian Shield of pyrope, chromium diopside, chromium spinelides, ilmenite and rutile as possible indicators of potentially diamond-bearing objects are presented. The expediency of using these minerals in the practice of geological prospecting for diamonds in Ukraine has been determined. The list of potentially diamond-bearing rocks on the Ukrainian Shield is outlined. Summarized data on diamond-bearing meteorite craters of Ukraine. Important practical developments regarding further searches for diamond-bearing rocks and placers on the Ukrainian Shield and its slopes are proposed.

The results of the research work can be used in diamond prospecting. The work has scientific-theoretical and practical significance.
