Typomorphism of diamond and its companion minerals from the rocks of Ukraine

ABSTRACT

Report on scientific and research work: 370 pages, 120 figures, 70 tables, 138 references.

The object of the research – diamonds, garnets, chrome spinelids, picroilmenites, chrome diopsides, zircons and other mantle minerals from kimberlites and streak aureoles of the Ukrainian shield.

The purpose of the work – establishment of typomorphic features of diamond and its companion minerals from rocks of the Ukrainian shield. Improvement of mineralogical criteria for forecasting and searching for diamond-bearing kimberlites in the territory of Ukraine.

Research methods – crystal-morphological, electron-microscopic, ontogenic, electron-probe, spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, trace-mineralogical.

Special attention is paid to the results of research on typomorphism, morphology, chemical composition and physical properties of mantle minerals, crystalline inclusions in them and their paragenesis.

Placer diamonds from each megablock of the Ukrainian Shield have their own indicator features and local root sources. Among the pyropes, pyrope-almandines, chrome spinels, chrome diopsides, and picroilmenites from kimberlites and scattering aureoles known within the Ukrainian shield, there are selected varieties that are considered paragenetic satellites of diamond and are used to evaluate the prospects of diamond bearing and localize the search for diamond deposits.

For the first time in the kimberlites of the Ukrainian shield, such an indicator mineral as zircon and its syngetic badeleite, calcirtite and zirconolite were identified and studied. These minerals crystallized from the kimberlite melt at different stages of its evolution: zircon – on protomagmatic, badeleite, zirconolite and calcirtite – on the late magmatic.

Taking into account the typomorphic features of the studied mantle minerals, an assessment of the prospects of native diamond bearing of each megablock of the Ukrainian Shield is given.

The results of of the research work were used in conducting prospecting for diamonds.

The work has scientific-theoretical and practical significance.
