Committee on meteorites

The Committee of Meteorites (CMET) of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded by V.I. Vernadskyi in 1938. with the aim of organization of collection of meteorites on the territory of Ukraine, popularization of knowledge about them and increaseof the meteorite collection of the Natural Sciences Museum of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which was created in 1937by P.Y. Sushitskyi. Samples of the collection was used for exposition, scientific researches and exchange with other collections.Thanks to academicians E.K. Lazarenko, M.P. Semenenko and E.V. Sobotovych, the Institute of Geochemistry and Physics of Mineral (now the M.P. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), organized in 1969, became the center of meteoritic, cosmic mineralogy and cosmochemistry.

Currently the CMET of the NAS of Ukraine includes 12 people, most of them are employees of the Department of Cosmoecology and Cosmic Mineralogy of the IGMOF and are professionally engaged in the search, collection and research of meteorites.

The CMET provides expert conclusion on a cosmic nature of the samples, meetings and consultations with a public on the issues of determination of new samples of probable meteorites, characteristic features of meteorites, their structure, composition and origin, and recommendations how organize search and collection of meteorites in a field. Members of CMET promote knowledge about meteorites through newspapers and magazines, radio, television, at thematic lectures in schools, colleges, astronomical observatories in Ukraine andother countries.

The CMET of the NAS of Ukraine ensure equal exchange of meteorites with museums and scientific institutions of the world, such as the National Museum of Natural History of France, the British National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institution of the United States, the Institute of Planetology in Münster(Germany), as well as with private collectors in order to expand the meteorite collection of the NMN of the NAS of Ukraine.

Head of CMET and the curator of the meteorite collection of The National Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine is Doctor of geology-mineralogical science, professor Vira P. Semenenko, and scientific secretary – Ph.D. in geology Nataliya V. Kychan.
