Committee on meteorites

1. The CMET of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine accepts samples of probable meteorites for diagnosis from individuals and legal entities in person or by mail. A visit to CMET and the sending of a sample is agreed in advance by e-mail or by phone (< /span>addressand phone numbers are indicated in the Contacts section).

2. Diagnostics is carried out free of charge.

3. Diagnosis is not carried out based on photographs.

4. About 20 g of sample is needed for diagnosis.

5. Together with the sample, you must provide your surname, first name and patronymic , phone number and address, at which you can be contacted, as well as the original data on the discovery of a probable meteorite:

- date of discovery;

- the place of discovery and the name of the nearest settlement and district center;

- total mass  and sample sizes;

- description of the circumstances of the fall/find;

- a general photo of the sample is preferred.

6. The answer regarding whether the received sample belongs to meteorites is provided CMET in a time frame that depends on the complexity diagnostics and, as a rule, does not exceed 1 month.

7. If there was no prior agreement, samples of a non-cosmic nature after diagnosis are stored in the CMET for 1 month.

8. In the case of the cosmic nature of the sample, the rules established by the International Meteorite Nomenclature Committee, as well as mutual agreements, come into force. At least 20% of the total mass of the meteorite is transferred to the working collection of the Meteorite Committee of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for detailed structural and mineralogical studies for the purpose of its classification. The owner receives a certificate that the sample belongs to meteorites. After classification, CMET sends the necessary data for registration of a new meteorite in the International Meteorite Catalogue. The rest of the studied sample, as state property, is transferred to the Meteorite Collection of the National Science and Natural Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for preservation.
