M.P. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of NAS of Ukraine

75th birthday of Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Oleksandr Mykolayovych Ponomarenko

The management and staff of the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation named after M.P. Semenenko of the NAS of Ukraine congratulates the outstanding Ukrainian scientist - geologist, academician of the NAS of Ukraine, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology, he was awarded the Order of "Holy Prince Volodymyr" of the 3rd degree, academician-secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, doctor of geological sciences, professor Olexandr Mykolayovych Ponomarenko on the occasion of his 75th anniversary.

Please accept our most sincere congratulations. We wish you health, well-being, family warmth, optimism, and creative success in your noble cause!

January 14 marks the 75th anniversary of the leading scientist in the field of isotope geochronology and isotope geochemistry, Doctor of Geological Sciences, Director of the M.P. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of the NAS of Ukraine, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Earth Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine, Oleksandr Mykolayovych Ponomarenko.

The scientist was born in 1950 in the Pereyaslav region. In 1971, he graduated from the Kiev Geological Exploration College; after that, he worked in a geological expedition, and then served as a sergeant in the Soviet Army (Russia). After graduating from the Geological Faculty of the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University in 1979, he entered postgraduate study at the Institute of Geochemistry and Physics of Minerals of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (now the M.P. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

In 1988, the scientist defended his candidate's thesis, and in 2003 - his doctoral thesis.

O.M. Ponomarenko is a specialist in the field of isotopic geology, which includes the main areas of research: isotopic geochronology and isotopic geochemistry. The relevance of his research is due to the need to conduct interregional correlation of the main stratigraphic divisions of individual geoblocks of the Ukrainian Shield (USh), without which it is impossible to clarify the features of its geological structure and the presence of minerals within the strata. Therefore, the results of the scientist's geochronological research based on U-Pb isotope dating of accessory zircon help to reconstruct the stages of geological development of the Ukrainian SSR and have planetary significance and practical application.

The scientist made an outstanding contribution to solving the problems of replenishing the mineral resource base of Ukraine (the tasks of identifying ilmenite-apatite deposits containing rare earths, vanadium, fluorine were solved, and advanced technologies for processing and enrichment of oxidized iron ores were implemented, which will contribute to the comprehensive processing of mineral raw materials, waste disposal and reduction of their harmful impact on the environment were implemented.

In general, the scientific achievements of O.M. Ponomarenko contribute to solving current scientific and practical problems, and the priority development of domestic science.

O.M. Ponomarenko is one of the initiators of the creation of the Center for Collective Use of Instruments at the Institute and is its head.

The scientist conducts extensive scientific and popularization work and is engaged in organizational activities, in particular, he is:
- Academician-Secretary and Member of the Bureau of the Department of Earth Sciences of the NAS of Ukraine;
- Co-Chairman of the National Stratigraphic Committee of Ukraine;
- Director of the Institute of Geochemistry and Mass Spectrometry of the Institute of Geochemistry and Mass Spectrometry of the NAS of Ukraine;
- Editor-in-Chief of the "Mineralogical Journal".

O.M. Ponomarenko has more than 350 scientific works (both co-authored and independent) - including 11 monographs and several patents and inventions.

For his active work in the development of domestic science, he received a number of distinctions and awards, including the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science and Technology" (2008) and the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (2014). For his personal contribution to the development of science and education, in 2020 he was awarded the medal of the NAS of Ukraine and the Small Academy of NAS "Vernadsky Volodymyr Ivanovych" established for the 100th anniversary of the NAS of Ukraine.

O.M. Ponomarenko is an outstanding scientist, on the one hand, and on the other - a great diplomat, an expert on human souls, who cares about every member of the Institute's staff, regardless of whether it is a cleaner or a corresponding member. For this, the entire staff of the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of the NAS of Ukraine loves and respects him.

The management and staff of the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation named after M.P. Semenenko of the NAS of Ukraine congratulate Oleksandr Mykolayovych on the occasion of his 75th anniversary. Please accept our sincere congratulations. We wish you health, well-being, family warmth, optimism, and creative success in your noble cause!
