M.P. Semenenko Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Ore Formation of NAS of Ukraine

Department of optical spectroscopy and luminescence of minerals

The main directions of investigation: study of electronic structure and detailed crystal chemical features of mineral substances by the methods of optical and infrared spectroscopy and luminescence; accumulation and systematization of experimental data related to the conditions of crystallization and the succeeding geological history of minerals; ascertainment of typomorphic features and searching criterions of the useful minerals and rocks.

The department is one of the leading centers in the branch of investigation of minerals by optical and infrared spectroscopy and luminescence as on the territory of the former USSR, as in Europe and Asia. The fundamental works on the optical and infrared spectroscopy and luminescence of various classes and groups of minerals, including the main rock-forming minerals, carried out in the department, have earned an appreciation and authority among the scientists of the world.

Together with the scientific investigations, continuous works on construction, building and improving of spectroscopic equipment are constantly carrying out in the department. Particularly, there were constructed a serious of optical microspectrometers, which can measure and register in the modern digital format the polarized optical absorption spectra of microscopic objects ≥ 10 micron of size at high pressure (up to 15 GPa) and in the temperature range from 77 to ~900 K.
