Research to determine the timing of geological processes and the formation of rocks, minerals and ores is carried out using uranium-lead, rubidium-strontium and samarium-neodymium isotopic methods.
Dating U-Pb by the isotopic method are performed on accessory uranium-containing minerals (zircon, monazite, uraninite, nasturan, allanite, sphene, etc.). The weight of the sample, depending on the uranium content, ranges from several micrograms (uraninite) to several milligrams (zircon, allanite, sphene). Galena or another mineral that does not contain uranium can be used to determine the model age of lead ore. Crystals of dateable minerals are selected by hand under binoculars.
Age determination Rb-Sr isotope method are carried out, depending on the task, on a series of samples of gross samples of cogenetic rocks, or on minerals of one sample. Chemical preparation is performed for samples ground into powder. The primary 87Sr/86Sr ratio can be calculated as the intersection of the (87Sr/86Sr) isochron , constructed from a series of samples of gross samples of cogenetic rocks, or from minerals of one sample. This ratio can be determined by direct measurement of the isotopic composition of strontium in apatite or plagioclase. In the latter case, a correction is introduced for the radiogenic addition of the isotope 87Sr, according to the ratio 87Rb/86Sr.
Research using the Sm-Nd isotopic method is carried out according to gross rock samples. Model ages can be calculated from CHUR and DM as well as εNd for individual samples, provided the time of rock formation is known. From a series of samples of gross samples of cogenetic rocks or from minerals of one sample, the age can be determined by the slope of the isochron, and the 143Nd/144Nd isochron axis can be used to calculate &epsilon Nd. Chemical preparation is performed for samples (rock, mineral) ground into powder.
